2018 Jaguar XF vs 2018 Jaguar XJ

2018 Jaguar XF Exterior Driver Side Front Profile vs 2018 Jaguar XJ Exterior Passenger Side Front Profile

For generations, the Jaguar XJ has been dominating the full-size luxury sedan segment in one form or another. It has undergone several different incarnations since its original debut back in 1968, but it has always represented the epitome of luxury. That’s no different today, as the XJ proudly sits atop the Jaguar lineup as its flagship sedan. However, there are other executive cars on the lineup, including the Jaguar XF.

We thought we’d show you some of the differences between the lineup’s midsize and full-size luxury sedans by pitting the 2018 Jaguar XF vs 2018 Jaguar XJ in a side-by-side comparison. Each vehicle has its advantages, and thus each has its type of buyer, and we thought we’d make the decision a bit easier for you this way.

2018 Jaguar XF

2018 Jaguar XJ

Midsize Sedan Segment Full-size Sedan
247 HP Horsepower 340 HP
28 mpg Combined Fuel Efficiency 21 mpg
19.1 cu. ft. Cargo Capacity 15.2 cu. ft.

Advantages of the 2018 XF

One glance at the table up above begins to give you a glimpse at how these two luxury sedans compare, and where each vehicle is stronger. Skipping the header row and the row which reiterates which segments the two vehicles belong to, we’ve started with a glance at horsepower. The XF’s 247 HP is nothing to scoff at, but it should come as no surprise that the top-of-the-line XJ trumps it, in particular by 93 horsepower.

However, that power does have a bit of a drawback, as the Jaguar XF achieves a greater combined fuel efficiency than the XJ, getting an extra 7 miles to the gallon and thus saving a bit of money in the long run. The final row might come as a surprise to some though, as the smaller Jaguar XF offers nearly 4 full cubic feet of extra cargo space. That’s a huge advantage to be sure, and surprising to be sure as larger sedans generally offer more cargo space. The reasoning, however, is because Jaguar put more of a focus on cabin space in the XJ, giving your passengers more room to breathe and stretch rather than more space for cargo.
